History
According to oral history given by our beloved deceased deacon, Deacon Anno Jarrell, Jones Chapel originated as part of First Missionary Baptist Church. First Baptist Church was organized during or before the early 1900's. Services were held in the Art Fellowship Hall which was located on what is now known as West 4th Avenue. On September 27, 1909, as indicated by official records, this site was purchased along with an old wooden two story building. Church service was held on West 4th Avenue until 1910.
Due to growing membership, there was a need for a larger building. The trustees of the church; Mr. Peter Evans, Mr. M. D. Currie, and Mr. P. E. King purchased a building for a place of worship. The building was purchased for $1000.00 on November 11, 1911 as verified by deeds recorded in Robeson County. Between 1911 and 1915, the church split. Those members that remain at the old church kept the name First Baptist Church. The other part of the church moved to Phillips Avenue and was named Second Baptist.
On February 17, 1915, Jones Chapel Missionary Baptist Church was organized from Second Baptist. The organizers and those responsible included Mr. J. W. McRae, Mr. W. M. Jones, Mr. W. L. Dixon, Mr. W. K. Drake, Mr. Arthur McLaurin, Mrs. Hattie Dixon, and Mrs. Ada Walker. The organizers chose Rev. P. C. Covington of Gibson, NC to be their first leader. The first deacons included Mr. W. M. Jones, Mr. W. L. Dixon, and Mr. J. W. McRae.
In 1924 many of the religious organizations were organized as Rev. I. B. Purcell was selected as pastor. In 1926, Rev Burns received and answered the call to serve as pastor. From 1930 to 1935 Rev. Clanton and Rev. Wiley served Jones Chapel. Rev. Wiley was a graduate of the Shaw Divinity School and went on to do further study at Harvard University.
In 1931, Mr. Dougal McLean became the first Sunday School Superintendent. The Sunday School grew into one of the major church auxiliaries under the leadership of Mr. McLean, Mr. Eddie Wilkerson, and Sister Carolyn Peterkin and current Superintendent Carnetta McDougald . The Sunday School development and growth helped to establish a top-notch Christian Education Department. Branches that grew out of this department include Christian Training Union, Deacon training, conferences, day care, and annual workshops.
From 1935 to 1936, Rev. Faison was the pastor at Jones Chapel. During this time the first pulpit set was purchased. Rev. Wertz served as pastor from 1936-1938. Rev C. J. Pastor Edmonds has a vision of Jones Chapel growing spiritually and physically. One of our goals is to construct a Multipurpose Building on land that was purchased adjacent to the existing grounds. A compact disc, projector and screen has been installed to enhance our audio and visual ministry. Weekly radio broadcast is a welcome addition to our out-reach ministry and our interactive web-site has been enhanced. In March 2014, the exterior appearance of our property was improved by
the paving of two parking lots.
